Empowerment Through Care: Christy Amalu’s Message at the PLEO Fundraising Award and Gala Night

Empowerment grows when people support one another with dignity, compassion, and care. This message was at the heart of Christy Amalu’s address at the third edition of the PLEO Fundraising Award and Gala Night, where she celebrated community service and encouraged attendees to carry the evening’s spirit into their everyday lives.

Christy is a senior clinical nurse advisor, author, CEO of Well Woman Network CIC, and a Liberal Democrat political candidate in Central Milton Keynes. Opening her speech, she welcomed the audience, dignitaries, and award recipients, acknowledging the shared commitment to service that brought them together.

Her address offered a reflection on what becomes possible when people take responsibility for supporting and empowering those around them.

Empowerment Begins with Partnership

Christy described empowerment as a chain reaction built on partnership, dignity, and compassion. When people receive encouragement and support, the effect can extend beyond their own lives, creating opportunities for them to help others.

This understanding of empowerment places relationships at the centre of community progress. It asks people to recognise one another’s potential, share opportunities, and offer support in ways that respect each person’s dignity.

Her message encouraged a shared approach to making a difference. Through collaboration and a willingness to stand alongside others, individuals and organisations can help create communities where more people have the confidence and support to move forward.

Care as a Force for Healing and Connection

Care was another central theme of Christy’s address. She spoke of its ability to heal, restore, and build connections, highlighting the difference compassion can make in people’s lives.

Her reflections connected care with empowerment: supporting someone’s wellbeing can also help them regain confidence, feel valued, and participate more fully in their community.

Seen this way, care becomes an active commitment. It is expressed through listening, offering practical support, and treating people with respect. These everyday actions give meaning to the values celebrated at an event such as the PLEO gala and help sustain them beyond the occasion.

Connecting the Message to Black History Month

Christy linked the evening’s theme to Black History Month, drawing on the examples of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Wangari Maathai, and Mary Seacole.

She referenced these figures to illustrate the courage, empowerment, and community care reflected in Black history. Their inclusion connected her message to a wider tradition of service and commitment to others.

That connection also invited reflection on the present. Celebrating the contributions of those who came before us can inspire a renewed commitment to the people and communities around us. Courage, compassion, and a willingness to act remain values that each generation can carry forward.

Honouring Service and Continuing the Work

Christy commended the award recipients, volunteers, and caregivers for their service, recognising the people whose efforts give practical meaning to empowerment and care.

Her appreciation reinforced the purpose of recognising community contributions. An award acknowledges dedication while also drawing attention to the values and actions that others can carry into their own lives.

As she concluded, Christy asked attendees to remain committed to kindness, community support, and empowering others beyond the event. The evening’s message called for continued participation: checking on someone, offering encouragement, sharing an opportunity, or supporting those who give their time to others.

At the third PLEO Fundraising Award and Gala Night, her address brought a clear invitation to everyone gathered: carry care into everyday life, treat people with dignity, and help others find the support they need to thrive.
